Vaping

What is Vaping?

  • "Vaping” is the use of electronic devices to inhale substances such as nicotine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinoid (CBD) oils, and other additives or flavorings.
  • Vaping devices include e-cigarettes, JUULss, e-hookahs, vape pens, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), and tank systems with or without modifications.

What is the outbreak of Lung Injury associated with vaping?

  • Many e-cigarette users across the country, particularly young adults who are otherwise healthy, are developing symptoms of lung injury after using e-cigarette or vaping products.
  • As of October 15, 2019, there have been 1,479 cases reported among 49 states, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.
  • No single product or chemical substance has been linked to all cases.
  • Local, state and national health agencies are actively investigating the outbreak.

What are the symptoms of Vaping-Associated Lung Injury?

  • Frequently reported symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, nausea, diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Many patients have reported initial symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, or fever.
  • Severe cases have required admission to the hospital.
  • Some patients have reported that their symptoms developed over a few days, while others have reported that their symptoms developed over several weeks. A lung infection does not appear to be causing the symptoms.
