Health Education is any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities to improve their health, by increasing knowledge or influencing attitudes. The Department of Health (DC Health) supports health education for children, adolescents and caregivers to reduce the high rates of teen pregnancy, sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), and violence amongst youth.
DC Health's Community Health Administration (CHA) sponsors the following health education programs for children and youth:
Health and Sexuality Education Program: Health and sexuality education sessions for District children and youth.
Violence Prevention Program: Violence prevention education for students in grades K-12 at DC Public and Public Charter Schools in Wards 7 and 8.
Education sessions are generally designed to run for one full hour and can be delivered as a single session or as part of a series. Please visit the program pages for more information on specific session topics and instructions on how to request DC Health's health education services.
In-Home Parent Education: DC Health also provides funding to community organizations to provide parenting education for parents of children aged 0-5, in the parents’ own homes. The parenting program curricula supported by DOH include: Parent as Teachers (PAT) and Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters. For more information, contact the number below.
