Traveling Into the District of Columbia With Pets

In order to bring your pet into the District, your pet will need a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection issued within 30 days of travel by a Licensed Veterinarian. Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and distemper and cats must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before travel.

Please note that Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport also known as DCA (Virginia), Dulles International Airport (Virginia), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (Maryland) are not inside the District of Columbia. This means if you do not wish to come into the District other than traveling thru the airports, you will have to contact the following respective jurisdictions:

  • Virginia Department of Agriculture (1) 804-786-2483
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture (1) 410-841-5810, as well as the airline you are traveling with.
