2014 Outbreak

The 2014 Ebola epidemic was the largest in history, affecting three countries in West Africa, particularly Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. In October 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implemented enhanced entry screening at five United States airports that receive over 94% of travelers from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, including at Dulles International Airport. The District of Columbia Department of Health (DC Health) began actively monitoring travelers from these countries residing in or visiting the District in October 2014. During the 2014 outbreak in West Africa, CDC periodically updated its recommendations and guidelines. Per updated CDC guidelines, DC Health ended monitoring of travelers from Liberia on June 17, 2015, travelers from Sierra Leone on November 10, 2015, and travelers from Guinea on December 29, 2016.Currently, monitoring of travelers in the US from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone is no longer recommended by the CDC.
