Brittani Saafir-Callaway

Brittani Saafir-Callaway, PhD, MPH, Interim Senior Deputy Directory, CPPE

Brittani Saafir-Callaway, PhD, MPH, is a skilled leader in governmental public health with over a decade of experience in optimizing processes and structures. Her expertise spans surveillance, data management and analytics, with a focus on enhancing public health initiatives through the effective and efficient use of data and research.

Most recently, Dr. Saafir-Callaway served as the Division Chief for Strategic Information in the HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Administration. In this role, she led efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate process improvements, significantly advancing the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of case surveillance.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Saafir-Callaway played a pivotal role in creating DC Health’s first HIV Cluster Detection and Response Plan, establishing the District’s initial HIV transmitted drug resistance profile, and producing its first HIV incidence estimate. Her work has been critical in shaping the district’s strategies for addressing HIV and related health issues.

Dr. Saafir-Callaway earned her PhD in Sociology from Howard University and her MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her academic background equips her with a profound understanding of how social dynamics intersect with public health, driving her dedication to using data and research to enhance health outcomes for individuals and communities.
