Vaccines For Children - VFC

The Vaccines for Children Program (VFC) is part of the DC Department of Health Immunization Program. It is a federally-funded entitlement program that provides vaccines free of charge to enrolled providers that  serve eligible patients. The program began in October 1,1994 and provides vaccine recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

VFC Vaccine Eligibility

VFC vaccines are available to children 18 and under who meet at least one of the following criteria::

  • Are eligible for Medicaid or enrolled in Medicaid
  • Have no health insurance
  • Have health insurance, that does not cover immunizations AND receive care at Federally-Qualified Health Centers or
  • Native American or Alaskan Native.

VFC Provider Benefits

  • Provide necessary vaccines to uninsured and underinsured children without incurring vaccine costs
  • Enhance the services provided relative to the Early Periodic Screening and Diagnostic Testing benefit
  • Generate revenue through vaccine administration fees 
  • Receive technical assistance to help improve vaccination rates
  • Access the Central Immunization Registry database which provides definitive information on due and overdue immunizations and immunization histories

Become a VFC Provider

You can enroll by:

  • Requesting a provider enrollment packet through the VFC Program at (202) 576-9319 or download and print forms [PDF]
  • Completing and returning the enrollment, which lists the requirements for participation
  • Completing the provider profile to ensure you receive the amount of vaccine needed for your office
  • Receiving training on VFC requirements once enrolled

Requirements for Participation

By participating in the VFC Program, you agree to:

  • Screen all children for eligibility
  • Submit documentation to the VFC program for each vaccine dose administered
  • Follow the recommended immunization schedule established by the ACIP, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Practitioners and DC law except where medically contraindicated
  • Not charge for VFC-supplied vaccine
  • Provide vaccine information materials as prescribed by law
  • Complete the Provider Profile and Enrollment form
  • Allow VFC staff access to your practice for technical assistance and program review
