To expand access to quality primary and emergency care for the underserved through the expansion and enhancement of existing health care facilities and the construction of new facilities in underserved areas.
Program Description
The Capital Expansion Projects are part of the DOH’s Capital Health Project (CHP) initiative to invest tobacco settlement/Community Health Care Financing and other local funds to improve the health of District residents. The DOH granted over $100 million for capital expansion projects for District health centers and hospitals, including grants to the following organizations covering approximately 75% of the costs of the related capital projects:
Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC)
- Start-up and Operating Costs for CNMC’s new satellite pediatric emergency department located on UMC’s campus (Ward 8)
- Activities to link families to usual sources of primary care
DC Primary Care Association (DCPCA)
- Bread for the City’s 11,000 square foot expansion of its 7th St NW site (Ward 2)
- Community of Hope’s new 37,000 square foot health center on S. Capitol St SW (Ward 8)
- Mary’s Center’s new 28,000 square foot health center on Georgia Ave NW (Ward 4)
- Unity Health Care’s 28,000 square foot replacement for its Anacostia Health Center (Ward 8)
- Unity Health Care’s new 43,000 square foot Parkside Health Center on (Ward 7)
- Unity Health Care’s 20,000 square foot replacement for its Brentwood Health Center (Ward 5)
KIPP DC
- Kids Smiles’ new non-profit pediatric dental clinic on Benning Road SE (Ward 7)
Providence Hospital’s Geriatric Clinic Without Walls House Call Program (Various Wards)
United Medical Center (UMC)
- Construction of the new CNMC satellite pediatric emergency department on UMC’s campus
- Elevator modernization project
United Planning Organization’s Planning Grant For a Ward 5 Health Center
Washington Hospital Center (WHC)
- Renovations of emergency department (ED) and MedStar Trauma Center areas
- Purchase of equipment for the ED, Trauma Center and intensive care unit (ICU)
- Implementation of an electronic health record for the ED and ICU
