Occupational Safety and Health Statistics Program

The District of Columbia Department of Health collaborates with the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Safety Health Statistics Program to serve as the premier source of information on the safety and health of District of Columbia workers by providing relevant data on injuries, illnesses and fatalities that affect District of Columbia workers. Our goal is to provide timely, accurate and impartial data relevant to the needs of our users and to the social and economic conditions of District of Columbia residents, its workers and their families.

Data

The Occupational Safety Health Statistics Program presents three distinct types of data.

  • Summary data: Reports on the number and rate of injuries and illnesses by industry
  • Case and demographic data: Provides additional details on the worker injured, the nature of the disabling condition, and the event and source producing that condition for those cases that involve one or more days away from work
  • Fatality data: Provides information on 28 separate data elements including information on the worker, the fatal incident and the machinery or equipment involved

Data Usage

Data is used to provide District of Columbia workers, employers and policymakers with the information they need to keep the District of Columbia competitive in a global economy. It is:

1. A primary source of morbidity and mortality data relative to the work force and provides the District of Columbia government, employers and policy makers with valuable data regarding the rate of work related injuries, illnesses and deaths by industry.

2. Used by employers to implement interventions to reduce the incidence and prevalence of certain work-related injuries as their injury and death rates have a direct impact on their premium for workers compensation insurance, loss of work days and productivity.
