City Administrator to Announce District Preparation for Heat Wave this Weekend

Thursday, July 21, 2016
District to open cooling centers, extend hours for various pools and spray parks to help residents combat heat

(Washington, DC) – The Office of the City Administrator (OCA) will host a press conference with City Administrator Rashad Young, Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) Director Chris Geldart, Department of Health (DOH) Director Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Keith Anderson, and Pepco Holdings Senior Vice President Bill Gaufsan to address the planned activation of the District Heat Emergency Plan in preparation for forecasted temperatures above 95 degrees.

Residents are being urged to plan ahead for the escalating temperatures by drinking plenty of water, checking on elderly neighbors and friends, and remaining in shaded and air-conditioned places as much as possible. Cooling centers will be opened across the District and multiple community pools and spray parks will offer extended hours to provide residents with opportunities to beat the heat. Additional information about the Heat Emergency Plan and how to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion are available at heat.dc.gov.
