Public Points of Distribution (PODs) are centralized locations where the public can pick up life sustaining commodities following a disaster or emergency. This can include commodities such as food and water, as well as medications in the event of a biological emergency. PODS can be established that allow drive through service, pedestrian walk-through service, or at mass transit locations to accommodate bus and rail passengers. Supplies distributed are typically based on a family of three, but can vary depending on the method of distribution. For example, a family in a vehicle could receive more supplies than a pedestrian who can only hand carry items.

PODs opened by the Department of Health (DOH) will center on distributing health care related items. This could include vaccines, antibiotics, or other medical items. Department of Health PODs typically are staffed by DOH personnel and volunteer members of the Medical Reserve Corps.
